Full Professor at the School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp), Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Holds an MD degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1976), a master's degree in Mathematics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (1980) and doctorate in Population Dynamics of Infectious Diseases from Harvard University (1988). He is a CNPq research productivity scholarship holder, retired full-time researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and adjunct professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
