FGV EMAp once again hosted one of the world's leading events on mathematics and finance. This time, the school welcomed the 19th edition of Research in Options: RiO 2024, which featured the presence of key experts in the field.

The program included academic lectures and minicourses, with participation from notable figures such as Mohammad Fesanghary and Bruno Dupire from Bloomberg, and Ryan Donnelly and Teemu Pennanen from King’s College London. They covered topics such as liquidity strategies, incomplete financial markets, and stochastic processes with memory.

According to Professor Rodrigo Targino from FGV EMAp and one of the event organizers, the conference was a unique opportunity for the school's community: "By hosting an event of this magnitude in Rio de Janeiro, we provide our students the chance to interact with researchers they would typically encounter at high-level international conferences, reinforcing FGV EMAp's position as a reference in quantitative finance," he explained.

Significant moments and contributions

RiO 2024, held from December 4 to 8, featured standout moments, such as the lecture by Julien Guyon from École des Ponts ParisTech, who presented advancements in his research on joint option calibration, a topic that earned him the Quant of the Year award in 2024. Additionally, the event marked the launch of Teemu Pennanen's book Convex Stochastic Optimization and the introduction of the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management specialization course, which will begin in 2025.

"Throughout the editions of RiO, it is fascinating to observe how scientific contributions are built incrementally, reflecting years of continuous work. This exchange of knowledge is essential for the advancement of the field," emphasized Targino.

Partnerships and impact on the community

In addition to the organization by FGV EMAp, the event was supported by FAPERJ, Bloomberg, and institutions such as the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) and the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), solidifying Brazil's role as a center of excellence in mathematics applied to finance.

"One of the legacies of this event is to show the new generations the numerous opportunities in the field of quantitative finance, ranging from academic research to the financial market," emphasized Targino. Looking ahead, FGV EMAp aims to continue promoting events that connect cutting-edge research with market demands, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations and consolidating its leadership on the global stage, such as the Applied Inverse Problems (AIP) 2025, which will be held from July 28 to August 1, 2025.

2024 Overview

In addition to hosting RiO 2024, FGV EMAp also welcomed the 12th edition of the Bachelier Finance Society World Congress in July, one of the largest events in the field of mathematics and finance. "The year 2024 was extremely productive for the quantitative finance area at FGV EMAp. The Bachelier Finance Society World Congress featured over 300 speakers. As always, it was a great pleasure to welcome our friends and colleagues in the profession," celebrated the professor.
