The 14th edition of the event will be held in Rio de Janeiro starting next Monday and the presence of 55 speakers from Brazil and abroad has already been confirmed.
Between March 4th and 9th, the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) will host the 14th edition of the Brazilian Continuous Optimization Workshop, BrazOpt. The event is open for registration and will feature conferences, plenary sessions and presentations of high-level work in the area of Continuous Optimization.
Topics to be covered cover theoretical, computational, and implementation issues in both linear and nonlinear programming, including variational inequality, complementarity problems, nonsmooth optimization, vector optimization, generalized equations, stochastic optimization, and more.
In total, 55 of the most famous professionals in the field in Brazil and abroad have already confirmed their presence as speakers at the event, which will feature theoretical, computational and implementation discussions, which are the core of international scientific research.
Highlights
Among the researchers who will present at the event, the Belgian Philippe Toint, from the University of Namur, stands out, who will give the opening session of BrazOpt 2024 on Monday, the 4th, at the FGV Cultural Center. Toint is one of the most famous figures in the computational area of Continuous Optimization, especially in Software Development for Optimization.
On the hosts' side, Brazil also commands respect for the group of researchers who will be on the EMAp stage. Ernesto Birgin and Paulo Silva e Silva, Professors at UNICAMP, have guaranteed space on the stage, along with eight plenary members of the event. The complete BrazOpt 2024 schedule is available on the event website.
The BrazOpt 2024 Organizing Committee will be made up of six excellent Professors from FGV EMAp who are references in the area of research in Applied Mathematics. They are: chair Alfredo Noel Iusem, accompanied by Bernardo Costa (visitor at EMAp), Fernanda Maria Pereira, Maria Soledad Aronna, Philip Thompson and Vincent Guigues.
BrazOpt 2024 is organized by FGV EMAp and is funded by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support in the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
FGV EMAp at the center of Continuous Optimization
Professor at FGV EMAp and specialist in Optimization, Iusem believes that the institution will gain even more respect in the area by hosting for the first time one of the most important Applied and Computational Mathematics events on the Brazilian calendar.
“BrazOpt 2024 will have a total of 55 speakers, including 10 plenary speakers, of which seven are foreigners and three are Brazilian guests. There will be two plenary sessions per day, in the morning, while the assigned presentations will take place in the afternoon. It can be noted that it is an event that brings the best of the international area of Continuous Optimization and only highlights how Brazil is an unavoidable reference across the planet, as evidenced by the participation of experts from the country as associate editors of the best magazines of the area”, he reinforces.
Event origin
The first edition of BrazOpt was held in 1998, in Florianópolis, due to a demand in the area of Continuous Optimization in Brazil. The event arose as a consequence of an initiative of the Support Program for Centers of Excellence (PRONEX), of the current Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), encouraging research and scientific development in highly competent groups in their sector performance.
The idea was to create a forum for discussing topics related to one of the main branches of Applied Mathematics. The last BrazOpt took place in 2019, at IMPA, in Rio de Janeiro, and its 14th edition will be the first after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Registrations
Undergraduate students interested in participating in BrazOpt 2024 can register with a reduced fee of R$50.00. The value for Brazilian researchers at other levels is R$200 and, for foreign researchers, R$1200. Registration can be done directly through the event website.
